You’re at the highest point of the city. You have taken 238 steps to conquer the 60 metres of the bell tower! Congratulations!
From the viewpoint, the city looks tiny, but Lleida, located in the west of Catalonia, is the capital and economic driving force of Segrià, an extensive region whose name comes from the river that crosses the city, the Segre. With a current population of 140,000, the city spreads out on both sides of the river. Various bridges and footbridges connect the right bank of the river, where you are now, to the left bank, where, in addition to the Champs Elysées, is the Mitjana Natural Park, one of the largest and most beautiful riparian forests conserved in Catalonia.
You can also make out Lleida’s other hill, turó de Gardeny, where an important part of the castle built there by the Templars during the second half of the 12th century is preserved. The hill also hosts Parc Agrobiotech Lleida, a forward-looking initiative with an international outreach focusing on research into and the development of the agri-food industry.
Lleida is surrounded by its orchards, Horta de Lleida, a more sparsely populated but intensely exploited area, where you can find crops of all kinds and, especially, fruit plantations.
