Imatge de la notícia 4. The name of the repression

The plaque embedded in the back wall of the main gate of the fortification, dated 1708, insists on reminding us of the name Joan Carles Cristià de Landas, Earl of Louvigny, and the first governor of Lleida.

D. IVAN CARLOS C. DE LANDAS
CONDE DE LOVVIGNES GOV. DE LEIDA HISO EN 1708

Under its mandate, the repression against the civilian population was brutal. The city, sacked before and after the siege, had a ruinous appearance with innumerable damage to houses, churches, monasteries, squares, and streets. Of the 1,500 homes existing in Lleida between 1702 and 1706, in 1708 only 600 remained, the equivalent of about 2,400 people. The demographic decline was in line with the scarcity of food. Many farmers and peasants were subject to the confiscation of their goods and crops to feed the troops quartered in the Castle of the King as well as the Seu Vella, closed for worship and turned into military barracks. The productive dynamic was severely affected, since two thirds of the municipal area and irrigated land in Lleida remained uncultivated. The manufacture of silk and wool was in a precarious state.
