1. Lleida, the punished city
Monday 16, september 2013
Your journey around the hill starts here. You will learn more about the facts related to the 1707 siege of Lleida and the consequences.
The Crescent Ravelin, where you are presently located, is the defensive structure that had to be overcome to reach the main fortification located in the highest part of the hill. Called the Crescent Ravelin due to its shape, it dates back to 1708. A few years earlier, the city of Lleida had been defeated before the Bourbon troops as part of the War of the Spanish Succession. Since then, the city, and the hill in particular were extremely militarized.
After the ravelin, you will find a plaque and stairs where you can access the top and find a new QR code.
The plaque reflects on the punishment Lleida would receive after its surrender at the hands of its first governor, Joan Carles Cristià de Landas. According to the plaque, once the city was captured, it was commissioned to build a new fortress over the destroyed city. However, it must be noted that what was done was expand a fortification that was already undertaken in 1640 during the Catalan Revolt.
